Summit 50 Plus Helping Meals on Wheels

Campaign Extended

In the past, our 2nd Summit 50 Plus Gives Campaign raised almost $42,000 to support local initiatives.  Now, our Donation Campaign returns!  In conjunction with the National March for Meals Celebration, it will have a singular focus on one of Summit County’s worthiest nonprofits: Mountain Meals on Wheels.  Our goal is $45,000, and all of your tax-deductible donations will go toward funding this important program.

Why Meals on Wheels Needs Your Help Now

The mission of Mountain Meals on Wheels is to provide healthy and nutritious meals to adults of any age, who are homebound and unable to prepare their own meals due to health issues. The program is available temporarily for local residents, who are suffering from illness or recovering from surgery. It also operates on a long-term basis for those in need. Our on-site chef prepares meals in the commercial kitchen located at the Community & Senior Center.  Then, twice per week on a year-round basis, volunteer drivers deliver meals all across Summit County.  Volunteers also perform wellness checks and bring the local newspaper – all with a smile!

In 2021, the Mountain Meals on Wheels program served a total of 7597 meals. In 2022, the program served an average of 350 meals per month. And, in case weather conditions prevent our drivers from reaching clients, Mountain Meals on Wheels also provides homebound clients with shelf-stable foods, known as Blizzard Boxes. For comparison, the preceding figures represent roughly double the number of meals served in pre-pandemic years. Mountain Meals on Wheels delivered 2177 meals in 2019 and 1463 meals in 2018.

Over the past few years, Mountain Meals on Wheels has encountered unique challenges. In addition to tremendous growth in the number of meals served, the program is also contending with soaring food costs. And, we know there are still more people out there who need this service. In sum, the program therefore urgently needs your support to continue serving local, homebound adults.

Our Summit 50 Plus Campaign now ends on April 2. But, you can donate at any time, including right now! Check out our goal tracker on this page to see how your tax-deductible donation helps us reach our goal!
